I won’t fool myself into believing there’s some perfect man out there who can read my mind and save me from myself. Guys like that don’t actually exist, and I really wouldn’t want one even if they did. I’m not a damsel in distress, and I certainly don’t need Prince Charming — I just need a good man.
1. YOU CAN’T SAVE ME, ANYWAY.
I’m the only one who can rescue myself from my downward spirals. That’s why I don’t want you to play the role of hero. I just want you to be there to comfort me when I’m down and congratulate me after I pull myself back up.
2. YOUR HEART MATTERS MORE THAN YOUR MUSCLES.
I don’t care how much you can lift or how many miles you can run. The size of your biceps isn’t a big deal to me. The size of your heart matters a hell of a lot more.
3. I CAN TAKE CARE OF MYSELF.
You don’t have to support me financially, change the oil in my car, and beat up burglars for me. I’m a self-sufficient woman, which means you’re a luxury, not a necessity. As long as you’re there for me emotionally, then you’re playing your part.
4. YOU CAN PROVE YOUR LOVE IN SMALL WAYS.
You don’t have to stand up for me by punching villains in the face. As long as you support my decisions, and treat me like I’m your teammate, I’ll feel like the luckiest girl in the world. Little tokens of affection can make the biggest impact.
5. I KNOW NO ONE IS PERFECT.
I don’t have unrealistic expectations of men. I know that there isn’t a human being on this planet who’s free from flaws. I can’t expect you to be perfect, so I’m only going to ask you to try your best to make me happy.
6. I’M NO SUPERWOMAN.
I can’t juggle work, my friends, and my love life without getting a little stressed from time to time. If it’s impossible for me to tend to every area of my life without breaking a sweat, then how can I expect you to do the same? I’m going to give you some leeway, because I know you’re trying your hardest.
7. SUPERPOWERS DON’T ACTUALLY EXIST.
As much as I’d love it if you could read my mind, I know that it’s an unreasonable thing to ask for. As long as you actually listen when I verbalize my feelings and respect what I have to say, then I can’t complain.
8. YOU CAN BE A HERO ON A SMALL SCALE.
You don’t have to right the world’s wrongs in order to impress me. As long as you right the wrongs you’ve done to me, and vow to never repeat them, then you’re fulfilling your duties as my boyfriend.
9. EMOTIONAL JOURNEYS MATTER MORE THAN PHYSICAL ONES.
You can’t fly me around town like Superman does with Lois Lane, but you can make me feel like I’m flying. If you give me that exhilarated feeling whenever you look at me, then I’ll never question whether or not I’m with the right man. I’ll know I’m right where I need to be.
10. A BUSINESS SUIT IS SEXIER THAN A SUPERHERO SUIT.
We can all agree that ties look better spandex. That’s why I’d take a man who works hard for a living, and looks good while doing it, over a superhero any day.
